How do I start coaching?

Whether you're interested in life coaching or business coaching, initially there are similar steps involved, which are explained on this page. Please e-mail me if you have additional questions.

The first thing to bear in mind: you don't have to know in advance what kind of coaching you want, or what you plan to achieve. One advantage of coaching is that it helps you get clearer about what your priorities are. Some clients come to a first meeting simply with the sense that life could work more efficiently or more harmoniously for them. That's more than enough to start.

It also helps to understand the difference between coaching and therapy. Therapy generally aims to heal emotional or mental illness, while coaching focuses on enhancing wellness and increasing success for people whose lives already function pretty well.

Making contact

I prefer an initial approach by e-mail. I've found that writing a few lines about why you're considering coaching is already a powerful way of gaining clarity. You can expect to hear back from me within one business day.

The next step is to schedule an introductory conversation, either via phone or skype. This usually lasts around twenty minutes. It's an opportunity for both of us to get an idea of how we might work together. I'd like to know more about what you expect from coaching. You may have questions about me, and about how I work. This introductory chat is free of charge.

How many sessions will I need?

If you'd like to take another step after our first conversation, I will suggest scheduling an initial coaching session. This session lasts one hour, and can be in person or via skype/telephone. The purpose of this session is to collect as much information about where you currently stand, and the issue/s we will be working with.

Within two or three days of your first coaching session, I will e-mail you with a summary of what we spoke about, and a suggestion of how to structure the coaching process. Depending on what you wish to achieve, or to resolve, it's realistic to expect between three and ten coaching sessions. I'd like to emphasise that everything you communicate during coaching will be treated as strictly confidential.

If you're ready to take a step towards the adventure of coaching, contact me to arrange your no-cost, introductory conversation.
